soundtrack of life

whilst sitting and listening to my ipod i am always amused how certain songs can whisk me straight back to a certain place, time, feeling.... here is what i have remembered this week (the dates are approximate):

thriller, michael jackson - hanging out with shannon who lived across the street, scared out of my mind but soooo happy to be hanging out with a big kid. she had a thriller poster to match and yellow curtains. i was 5. 1982. stray cat strut, stray cats - the dank warmth of shakeys pizza parlor juke box in redlands california and being in awe of my big brother's impeccable musical taste; early elementary school. 1984.

rock me amedeus, falco - a sunny day in so. cal, practicing my dance moves in the johnson's front yard whilst listening to my new lavendar ghetto blaster. i was the best dancer on the block, hells yeah. 1984.

rock lobster, b-52s - the smell of my bro's room in our house on hickam air force base in hawaii as i opened the tape drawer, removed the b-52s tape, and replaced the casette box - all the time praying that he would not discover my theivery. 1987.

devil bunny, my life with the thrill kill kult - laying on my back on the floor with my best friend, feet up on the bed, wearing 'question authority' t-shirt, talking about boys. redlands california. 1991.

bitchin' camaro, dead milkmen - dozing in and out of conciousness after knee surgery, driving up "the canyon" from salt lake to park city utah with my dad. 1993.

this love, pantera - sitting on a school bus, travelling to the utah academic decathlon state championship in st. george, missing the big guy so much that i thought my heart would break. yes, it was on a mix tape, from him. 1995.

inside out, eve 6 - driving down a sun dappled street in sw portland towards lewis and clark college trying on that feeling of freedom that comes from breaking up with your boyfried of several years. 1999.

perfect gentleman, wyclef - driving to a flaverpak show in salem oregon, singing and laughing with jbyte and patsy. called up my mom and said that i'm in love with this stripper yo. 2002.

ok... so now that i've established that i'm a complete and utter geek, and always have been - what are some hits off of your life soundtrack? (losing virginity songs don't count, too predictable)

Henry Mancini, Big Screen, Little Screen sometime in the 70s... My parents are trying to brainwash me and drive me insane with this drivel.

1970?... The Partridge Family, Every Single Album... Are you kidding me? My sister is insane.

1975... Captain & Tennille, Love Will Keep Us Together... I'm going to kill my sister if she doesn't quit playing this song.

1976-77?... Peter Frampton, Frampton Comes Alive... I'm really going to kill my sister if she doesn't quit playing this album. I still can't listen to this without wanting to kill my sister.

197?... Doobie Brothers, Black Water... I swear she is a dead woman. Why me? Why does she have to be my sister?

I swear the only reason she lived through adolescence and managed to reproduce is she could run!

5 String seranade-Mazzy Starr: 1993 walking around aimlessly after my girlfriend left the country holding the teddy bear she gave me and seeing her face in every car that passed.
Magic touch- The Platters: 1991 Getting very drunk for about the first time on a bottle of my parents SoCo and Peach Schnapps. Whenever I hear it I get the shivers.
Rocket Queen- Guns'n'Roses: 1987 Rocking out on air guitar in my living room with my best friend, acting like Johnny Depp and Peter Deluise from 21 Jump Street and piercing my ear for the first time. Left ear only.

La La La - Bert and Ernie: I was about 4 years old and played this tune on my Fisher Price record player. For grins, I'd speed up the player and make the two sound eevieel. 1982-ish.

Take On Me - Aha: Fucking shoot me... I can thank my mom for getting this and other god awful 80's tunes stuck in my noggin, for life.. She'd always play this tape that she recorded off of Magic 95FM (in Eugene) when we drove anywhere... and I was taken to many places.. But I mostly remember the Aha song driving back to Eugene from our cabin. It was the end of summer vacation, and I had school in two days... Suckage. 1987-ish.

Take My Breath Away - Berlin: Growing up, I'd hang out with a neighbor kid who was a big Top Gun nut. He liked planes in general. He'd always play the Top Gun soundtrack, and I'd tease him for playing this song cuz it was girly and stupid.... Of course, he's a complete genius who computed a new fractal when he was 13, and graduated from MIT... So... who's the stupid one now... 1989-ish.

Too Many Puppies - Primus: Homework on the kitchen table. I loved this CD - and ya know - I'm gunna stick it in my car now... Since they're coming to down - might as well get my ears listening to Frizzle Fry again.. 1993-present.

Oh geez... Let's see here.

Anything MLWTTKK, Oingo Boingo, Cure, Berlin, Breathe (yes, I remember when you listened to Breathe), Depeche Mode, Morrissey, Smiths, Suzanne Vega, Tori (My heart is sick of being in jeans....) reminds me of you. Not to mention I still have an extant copy (I think... unless it was unknowingly sacrificed in the most recent move) of Noise. The Island of Ulul, Them Toadsuckers, etc.

Any reggae and bscure punk reminds me of your brother in his sullen high school years.

Berlin, a bunch of the above referenced for Fred reminds me of Mariamamama.

Cure also reminds me of Cris.

I'm not being terribly specific am I?

Anything Sesame St. reminds me of my sister and my favorite sesame st. records.

Eternal Flame by the Bangles reminds me of having to take stupid-ass cotillion classes in 6th grade.

Under the Bridge by RHCP reminds me of Nick Striegel (heaven save us from that).

Primus Seas of Cheese: Sean-Ryan

I'm a Vegetable by PeaceMonkeySuede and the FLannel Posse: well, Pdan dressed as a carrot and Steve J. drop-kicking a cabbage into the audience.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, jr. hi in general, but Particularly Abbienormal singing it.

Peek-A-Boo by Siouxsie: Shelly, Amber, Sibel, Beth, Tara, and Kristen in the lip sync show.

Yeesh. I'm just reliving jr. hi.

Ani: Boston University, college in NEw Orleans

Jeff Buckley: Jake and Rockstar Matt, a twisted but rather oblivious love triangle. (making me the 3rd point)

Neutral Milk Hotel: Jake, David, Mina, Kelly, the Athens/New Orleans crew in general.

Catie Curtis "Dandelion" Let's not even go there.
Enough enough enough.
